You work so hard in your business to get organized, put systems in place, and create stability day to day. You may even be ready for the occasional crisis. But…are you ready for GOOD news? Your good news is the best thing that’s happened to your business lately, and you don’t want to let it pass you by. Let’s talk about creating your good news contact list.
You may have only heard about having an emergency contact list. The phone tree that gets set in motion when bad events befall us. You might be prepared for that. If not, I encourage you to check out this Marketing Tip of the Week on crisis communications to get some thoughts on what steps to take when your business hits a rough patch.
But you should be equally prepared for good news. If you are prepared for good news to happen, you can extend the life of it.

That great moment you just had – the achievement, the award, the milestone, the launch, the celebrity mention, the news feature – whatever that great moment was, how do you make sure it’s not just lightning in a bottle?
If you don’t have any other part of your plan in place yet, maybe it’s time to create a good news contact list. In a moment of clarity, sit down and make a list of everyone who needs to be informed of your special event.
Start with the key constituents. This could be employees, close friends and family, Board members, investors. Create a second tier. Maybe you include top customers or clients, members, VIPs, your business and personal network, your social media audience. What about a third tier? You might create a press release and distribute the news to media, local chambers, bloggers, community businesses, and others who have an audience of their own.
What if one of those third tier outlets picks it up? Share THAT out to your first two tiers again. You can tell them the great news about the great news to continue to extend the life of this event! Having a structured plan for sharing good news often creates more good news.

Don’t let the good news pass you by. Capitalize on it! This is a chance for you to build your reputation, your authority, and your momentum.
And, unfortunately, it is hard to activate the plan if you didn’t already create one before the moment came along.
So who would be on your tiers? Make an actual list of them and save it somewhere to refer to on your best days. If you need to mass email, save that group with all the email addresses. Whenever possible, try to hit the individuals again with a shorter, personal email to get their attention and use it as an opportunity to create momentum in conversations or initiatives that have died down.
Let’s see how far you can stretch your good news. Having your good news contact list ready and waiting will help!
