Today I wanted to address the flip side to the idea of knowing your brand, your market, your offering. This is the idea of the evolution of marketing your business. When you are marketing your business productively, it should naturally evolve.

Chances are that at some point you have come up with a new idea for marketing your business and thought to yourself, “Why didn’t I think of this before?!” In that moment, you are seeing all the missed opportunities, missed revenue, missed customers. It can be easy to think about what you lost.

When you are marketing your business productively, it should naturally evolve. #smallbiz #smb Share on X So, let’s reframe those moments for future reference. Your business is evolving. Why not embrace the evolution of marketing your business? Marketing is ultimately always an experiment. You make the best decisions you can at any given time with the information you have. You test the ideas, you track the results, you see what works. The epiphany you have today about how you should have been marketing your business all along is actually a result of this process.

Evolution in business is a good thing. It means you have learned something about what is needed and are now adapting.  Businesses that adapt can survive.  The same is true for marketing.

Businesses that adapt can survive. The same is true for marketing. #entrepreneur #marketing Share on X The way that you can continually push for the growth and evolution of marketing your business is by – at every step – asking yourself the purpose of what you are doing. What is the purpose of this marketing choice you are making? This color? This tagline? This photo? What are you saying by putting the ad in this particular magazine? What are you trying to achieve with running this social media post? Why are you using this marketing tool? If you can continue to ask these questions at each step, you will know that you are making the most-informed decisions each time in marketing your business.

In fact, if you want some help in knowing how to ask questions like this, perhaps start by taking a look at your marketing funnel to make sure you know what journey you want to take your audience through. If you have not thought about this before, read this blog about how to create your marketing funnel.

Once you know you are thinking carefully about how you are marketing your business and brand to the world, it is easier to relax and study the results to let them affect your future marketing. It is a good result to get new information. It is a good result to get new ideas from that new information. So, instead of seeing only the opportunities and revenue you have missed by not having this great idea earlier, just remember that it is a huge achievement that you are taking the step forward NOW.

Marketing your business is never perfect. Hopefully it always evolves. This is what allows you to stay on top of changes in the market and to have a business that adapts with the times. Instead of being frustrated by the opportunities missed, think about all the new ones you are going to take!
