Many small business owners have reluctance about newsletters.  If you fall into this category, I want to show you how powerful they can be.  The fact is there are a lot of benefits to reaching out to your email list consistently.  In a recent blog (click here), I address how having a regular newsletter can serve as the core of your customer retention plan and how to make it realistic for you long-term.  Today I want to introduce you to a cooler way to use your newsletters:  Using your newsletter analytics to be a magical, mind reading marketer.

Obviously one of the benefits of a newsletter is that it allows your audience to continue to build trust and awareness of your brand over time.  It makes you top of mind for them and reminds them what pain points you can help them resolve.  Your newsletters are a reminder to your audience that you are there for them.  Whether the newsletters are opened or not, that reminder still comes across if they just see your name in their inbox.

But newsletters are good for YOU too.  They give you the power to be magical in your marketing.  They give you the ability to be prescient in your marketing.  They give you the chance to get to know the behavior of the people in your audience so you can respond to it accordingly.

For those who are used to seeing analytics from social media or paid advertising on any platform, you know that analytics typically show you the demographics and behavior of your audience as a whole.  The power of newsletter analytics is that it shows you the behavior of specific people.

Wouldn’t it be easier for you to market to people if you could read their minds?  Newsletters let you do that.

If you have people who are just browsing but aren’t really interested?  Newsletters show you that.

If you have people who frequently consume everything you share, clicking and opening regularly?  Newsletters show you that.

If you have people who clearly only care about one specific thing you are telling them?  Newsletters show you that, too.

Of course, you can use newsletter analytics to show you the big picture of how your content is performing to your audience as a whole.  But knowing exactly who cares about which topics is beneficial to you from a sales and customer service standpoint.

Here are a couple of the stats you might want to review for your own newsletter:

  1. Individuals who open and click through…a lot. Look at the individuals on your list.  Different platforms have a different way of categorizing it, but many show you with a rating system which ones are most active with your newsletters.  Check out their profile.  See what they open.  See what they click on.  Is there a trend?  There is nothing stopping you from emailing them to follow up.
  2. Individuals who click on things you are selling. Maybe you just released an announcement about ticket sales for an upcoming event.  Maybe you did a feature within a newsletter about a product or service you are selling.  Maybe you ran a special or a sale.  Look at the individuals who clicked on those links.  They’re interested to some degree, and this could be an indicator for you to follow up further.

Newsletter analytics tell you who is interested and who is not.  They tell you by name.  If you are looking for this information, there is SO MUCH you can do with it.  And you can figure out where you are wasting your time.

Yes, a newsletter is great for warming your audience.  But also, it is a powerful mind reading tool for you that you can use to improve your customer service with all of your leads.

If you have a newsletter, and you have never looked at these stats, I encourage you to check it out now and see how informative it can be.  If you don’t have a newsletter, this might be a good reason to start one!
