Have you ever watched a movie or read a book where you felt so invested in the trajectory of the main character that you had to see how it ended?  Did you ever feel inspired along the way?  The arc that the character took is a ride you took with them, and it made you feel more invested.  The same impact can be made with your marketing!  Let’s talk about how to master the story arc and increase your sales.

One of the reasons an arc is meaningful is that it signifies change.  A character who begins and ends in exactly the same place – and stayed the same all the way through the middle – would be hard to get excited about.  It would also be hard to sell.  There is no progress.  No growth.

The greatest stories will involve characters who have a goal or a quest, characters who face a major challenge or setback.  What you watch is the journey they take.  And when you feel especially invested in the story, it is often because you found something relatable about the story that was being told.

Does this matter for sales?  It does.

Storytelling is marketing.  A great story arc motivates your future customers.  It can show them what awaits them.

Part of the way you can most effectively market your products and services is to show your audience the journey they will go on as a result of buying what you sell.  Paint them a picture of the starting point.  Make it a starting point they are likely to relate to.  Show them the challenge ahead of them.  Describe what they will experience with your offerings.

And then show them the result to expect.  Show your audience the end of the story, and make it good.  The sale is in the happy ending!

There are many techniques for giving them the story arc.  You can describe the experience someone else had with your products.  You can do it through a detailed testimonial, through a case study, or anecdotal telling of the story.

You can guide them through a meditative experience with the story and allow them to cast themselves as the main character.  Help them imagine themselves in the story so there is no disconnect.

You can even give suggestions through questions you ask.  “Do you want to sleep better at night?”  As soon as someone starts to relate to the suggestion you make, they become invested in how you plan to solve the problem.

Give your audience the story arc of their future journey with your product, and you give them a reason to buy it.  Help them understand and imagine the value of what you sell.  This is how you take a big step toward increasing your sales.

No one wants to watch the movie in which an untested hero does nothing all day.  No one wants to read the book that depicts a main character who accomplishes nothing.  No one wants to be that person.

Your customers, your clients, your audience, all of them want to see how you will help make their lives better. Show them the story arc and show them what they can be!
